Twenty ago next week Nelson Mandela was released from 27 years in prison. A large chunk of those years (18) was spent on Robben Island off Cape Town. Now that island is overrun by rabbits. And the management of the island, which is now a World Heritage Site, has no other choice but to hunt them down and kill them. Since October last year they’ve shot 3,500 rabbits and still have 8000 to go. And according to The New York Times the females can breed at three months of age and are capable of delivering litters of eight six times a year.
